These beans can be processed in many ways to provide cacao butter, cacao nibs, or cacao powder. Cacao is an extremely nutrient dense food and provides a plethora of nutritional benefits. It contains 40 times more antioxidants than blueberries. It is the highest plant-based source of iron. For people who are vegan or vegetarian, who do not consume meat, which is one of the highest sources of iron, cacao is a good additive to have in your diet to ensure you receive appropriate iron intake. Cacao is also a good source of calcium, it is a mood elevator and a natural antidepressant. It is easy to use in its many forms, and can be thrown in cake or pancake batter, smoothies, or in a perfect cup of rich hot chocolate.
Cacao Hot Chocolate
Ingredients:
8 ounces milk (almond, soy, cows etc)
1 heaping tsp cacao powder
1-2 tsp raw cane sugar
Splash of vanilla extract
Whipped cream (coconut etc)
Cacao nibs
Directions:
- Combine all ingredients in a pot over medium-high heat and whisk well until all ingredients are combined. Remove from heat just before mixture boils.
- Add to serving cup, garnish with coconut whipped cream, cacao nibs and enjoy!
